Streets

"Reduce congestion by accommodating all modes of travel (walking, bicycling, autos, trucks)"

Streets that are safe and accessible for many modes of transportation are critical to developing a viable town center. The streets you ranked highest have one major thing in common: they all provide a safe, comfortable pedestrian environment.

Score: +6.0

The image which received the highest score is a five lane arterial street with a planted median. This street provides for pedestrian travel along the street with wide sidewalks on both sides, landscaping and ample lighting.

The street provides a well marked, attractive mid-block crossing that is protected from traffic by a planted median. The refuge created by the median allows the pedestrian to deal with one direction of traffic at a time, greatly increasing the chances of a safe crossing. This street is an arterial but has limited driveway access so the vehicular traffic is able to move efficiently.

Score: +5.5

The above photo shows an arterial street with a wide, planted median. This median has mature trees that frame the street and create a very attractive streetscape. This type of street is a prototype for the boulevard proposed by the design team to link SR169 to the new town center.

Score: +5.5

Like the other two high scoring examples, the above photograph shows the elements that turn a street from a corridor that moves traffic into a place that accommodates many types of activity. The planting strip and street parking creates a safe buffer between the sidewalk and moving traffic.
