Basic Transportation Information

Communities have several choices regarding the type of transportation system that they develop. These can be summarized as follows:

  1. A car-based system that forces most trips to be taken in cars.
  2. An enhanced car-based system that includes walkways, trails, paths, and bike lanes to enable some trips to be made by walking and bicycling as well as by car.
  3. A fully multi-modal system that includes walking, bicycling, and transit, as well as cars and trucks.

A car-based system has never been implemented successfully in any city. This form of transportation system does not provide service to about one third of our population (the young, the economically and physically disadvantaged, and seniors). The multi-modal transportation system is becoming more prominent in this country with a growing number of communities adding transit systems.

Network

The basic and most critical element of a transportation system is the type of road network used. There are two distinct types of road networks. Each has different impacts on the number and types of trips that are generated within a community.

1. A grid network provides multiple number of routes to each destination by all modes of transportation, minimizing the number and length of trips.
