A trail to link children to school would be good. Schools closer to housing so kids could walk would be good. But isn’t that the nature of rural? What us the nature of rural? Projects you have are not designed to take advantage of the benefits of rural life. Rural was 20 years ago when we didn’t have amenities which we can access with a quick trip in the car. People didn’t make a lot of trips in their cars to rent videos, etc.
Parents drive kids to and from school because kids have to stay on buses and transfer. The trip is too long. Schools were located in remote areas to begin with. If walking conditions were safe, would it make sense for children to walk to school? No, was the answer from several people. Trees are nice and I don’t want to lose them, but it makes unsafe places for my kids to walk. No, distance too great. I stand with my daughter to wait for bus. (Fear of abduction) Understand we had a murder on a well used trail in the middle of the afternoon in September. This sparked a heated discussion about trails not concealed by trees. One person said money would be better off invested in more school buses than sidewalks. There seems to be a general feeling that the concept of walking to school is dangerous even if there were sidewalks and distances were appropriate. One person said at one time everyone knew everyone here and there wasn’t much traffic, especially through traffic. Several agreed it was safer to walk when they were children and they knew all the people along their route. In Washington districts get reimbursed for bus trips for children outside of one mile of the school. The District allows all students to ride the bus, no matter how close they are to school. However, they do not feel school bus trips make a significant impact on traffic. School oriented trips are only one little portion of any traffic problem. The point is that the decisions are yours to make and yours to control. We need to figure out where to go with this. Participants explained why they must drive kids so they can participate in extracurricular activities. One problem is schools are not in the subdivisions. |
